Sudden Oak Death in California: What It Is, and Where It Actually Occurs

Sudden oak death is a lethal tree disease caused by Phytophthora ramorum, a fungus like water mold that has killed tens of millions of oaks and tanoaks in coastal California and southwest Oregon. It is a real and serious disease, but it is a coastal one. It is not established in the Sierra Nevada foothills or the Sacramento Valley, and most of the oak decline I am called out to see in El Dorado, Placer, and Sacramento counties is caused by something else. This is what the disease is, how to recognize it, and why the name comes up far more often than the disease itself does here.

What is sudden oak death?

Sudden oak death is caused by Phytophthora ramorum, a plant pathogen in the group known as the water molds, or oomycetes. Despite the way it behaves, it is not a true fungus. It is more closely related to algae, and it moves and reproduces in water, which is why the disease follows the fog and the rain. Since it was identified in the mid 1990s it has killed an estimated 30 to 45 million trees in the coastal forests of California and Oregon, mostly coast live oak and tanoak. The word sudden describes the symptom, not the timeline. A tree can carry a trunk infection quietly for years, then brown out across the whole canopy in a matter of weeks once the infection and the secondary organisms overwhelm it.

Where sudden oak death actually occurs

The disease is tied to a narrow band of climate. Established wildland infestations sit within roughly 30 kilometers of the Pacific coast and San Francisco Bay, across fourteen coastal California counties from Monterey north to Humboldt, plus one county in southwest Oregon. Every one of those places shares the same conditions: cool, wet winters and frequent summer fog. Phytophthora ramorum needs that moisture to produce and spread its spores. The hot, dry summers of the Sierra foothills and the Central Valley are the opposite of what it needs, which is the main reason the disease has never taken hold inland.

Is sudden oak death in the Sacramento area or the Sierra foothills?

No. Sudden oak death is not established in the Sacramento Valley or the Sierra Nevada foothills, and it is not what is killing local oaks. The climate is too hot and dry, and the plant that drives the disease, California bay laurel, is far less common here than it is on the coast. When a blue oak, valley oak, or interior live oak declines in El Dorado or Sacramento County, the cause is almost always something else: Armillaria root disease, the invasive Mediterranean oak borer, Biscogniauxia canker on drought stressed trees, or simple long term drought and root damage. Getting that distinction right matters, because the treatment and the outlook for those problems are nothing like sudden oak death.

Which trees it kills, and which trees spread it

Phytophthora ramorum plays two very different roles depending on the host. On some trees it causes lethal bleeding cankers on the trunk. On others it causes only leaf and twig lesions, but those trees become the factories that produce the spores. The trees it kills are in the red oak group and tanoak:

  • Tanoak, which is not a true oak but is the hardest hit of all and dies fastest.
  • Coast live oak, the classic sudden oak death victim in the Bay Area.
  • California black oak, canyon live oak, and Shreve oak.

The white oak group is not killed by the disease. Valley oak and blue oak, the dominant native oaks across the foothills and valley, are not lethal hosts, which is another reason the disease has little to work with inland. The trees that spread it are the foliar hosts, and one matters more than all the rest:

  • California bay laurel, the single most important reservoir. The pathogen sporulates on bay leaves, and rain splashes those spores onto nearby oak trunks.
  • Tanoak leaves, plus common landscape plants including rhododendron, camellia, viburnum, and pieris, which is how the disease travels through the nursery trade.

How the disease spreads

Spread is local and weather driven. During the wet season the pathogen produces spores on infected bay laurel and tanoak leaves, and rain splash and wind driven rain carry those spores a short distance onto oak trunks, where they establish a canker. It does not move tree to tree through the roots the way Armillaria does, and it does not fly the way a beetle does. Over longer distances it moves the way most plant diseases move now, by people: infected nursery stock, green waste, firewood, and soil and mud on boots, tires, and equipment. That human pathway is exactly why California and federal agencies quarantine host nursery plants out of the infested zone, and why the rule for firewood is to buy it where you burn it.

Signs of sudden oak death on an oak

On a susceptible oak, the first sign is usually a bleeding canker on the trunk, typically on the lower five to six feet. It looks like a dark red brown or black ooze seeping from otherwise intact bark. There are no exit holes and no boring dust at this stage, which helps separate it from a beetle problem. As the canker girdles the trunk, secondary organisms move in fast:

  • Bleeding, oozing patches on solid bark, with no holes.
  • Hypoxylon canker fungus, which fruits as a crusty tan to black layer once the tree is dying.
  • Bark and ambrosia beetles, which arrive late as the tree fails and leave fine sawdust.
  • A canopy that turns from green to brown across the whole tree in a few weeks, the sudden collapse the disease is named for.

The catch is that a bleeding trunk canker is not proof of sudden oak death. Several other Phytophthora species and a few fungal cankers bleed in a similar way, and inland that is almost always what a bleeding oak turns out to be. Confirming Phytophthora ramorum specifically takes a laboratory, either culturing the organism or running a molecular test on the right tissue. That is diagnostic work, not a curbside guess.

What you can do

Once the pathogen has girdled a trunk there is no cure, so everything useful is about prevention and slowing spread:

  • In the coastal zone, high value coast live and black oaks that are still healthy but near a known infestation can be protected with a phosphonate treatment, sold as phosphorous acid or Agri-Fos, applied before infection. It is preventive, not a cure.
  • Reduce the inoculum. Removing California bay laurel within about ten to fifteen feet of an oak you want to protect measurably lowers the spore load on that tree.
  • Do not move the disease. Keep firewood, green waste, and nursery plants local, and clean soil off boots, tires, and tools when leaving an infested area.
  • Help the survey. The annual SOD Blitz program lets residents in coastal counties submit leaf samples that map where the disease is moving.

How I help

Most of my work with this disease is ruling it out. When a client sees a bleeding oak or a fast browning canopy and reads the words sudden oak death, my job is to look at the tree in the field and, when it matters, under the microscope, and tell them what is actually going on. Inland that usually means identifying Armillaria, the Mediterranean oak borer, Biscogniauxia, or drought stress instead, each of which points to a different response. For clients closer to the coast, or moving oak wood or nursery stock across county lines, I can advise on real sudden oak death risk and the sampling needed to confirm it.

Once the pathogen has girdled the trunk, no. Phosphonate treatments can help protect a healthy, high value oak that is near an infestation but not yet infected, but they are preventive and do not reverse an established canker.

Should I remove bay laurel near my oaks?

In the coastal infested zone, thinning California bay laurel within about ten to fifteen feet of a valued oak lowers the spore load and is a recognized way to reduce risk. In the foothills, where the disease is not present, there is no sudden oak death reason to remove bay, though other tree care reasons may still apply.
